QNAP TS-451 Review

With the TS-451, I got more than I expected.  This NAS is more than affordable for a quality 4-bay NAS ($499.99 USD) and provides all the features you need and want.  The TS-451 isn’t the cheapest 4-bay NAS on the market, but when you combine its capabilities, the QNAP quality we have come to love, and the performance, you get something that his very hard to beat.

In the benchmarks, the TS-451 was no slouch.  When compared to other 4-bay NAS we have tested, this one holds its own.  Simply said, this NAS flies… if you had any reservations about this NAS capabilities when it comes to transferring files quickly, leave them behind.  If you look at our NAS Benchmarking Database and filter by 4-bay NAS, this one either tops the charts or comes in near the top.

The TS-451 really demonstrates its superiority when you consider its multimedia capabilities.  Built-in transcoding functionality really enhances its position.  Now, serving up multimedia files to your mobile devices or your underpowered devices is easier than ever.  The quality is top notch and having on-the-fly transcoding as well as offline transcoding makes the TS-451 almost untouchable.  Compare this NAS to others in its price class and it really stands out.

For me, the TS-451 has become my new favorite 4-bay solution.  It delivers on all fronts, even price.  When paired with high quality drives, a robust multimedia collection, and a need for speed, this NAS will serve you well.  The TS-451 may not have a powerhouse processor, but that doesn’t slow it down.  Fast transfer speeds, transcoding, and multimedia capabilities make this NAS a super-star.

ASUSTOR AS5008T Review

ASUSTOR has become one of my go to manufacturers for NAS. They have made some great NAS at some very affordable prices. Naturally, as time goes on, components are less expensive for consumers and for manufacturers. This allows NAS makers to pack more power into their storage appliances without increasing costs. In some cases, we are finding more powerful NAS at lower costs. To compliment this decrease in costs, production ramps up, R&D ramps up, and product enhancements increase. Ok, the point of all that? ASUSTOR has released a new 8-bay NAS, gave it more power, slapped a new name on it, and... lowered the cost. Enter the AS5008T.
