QNAP TS-451 Review

Configuring your NAS has become a hair easier. In our last review, the QFinder application found our NAS quickly and provided a simple way to get things going. Well, QFinder hasn’t changed much, but with the TS-451 it handles the configuration without having to launch a browser.

Qfinder is a utility that starts the process of getting your NAS ready. Not only does it identify the QNAP devices that reside on your network, it is capable of configuring the device for those of you that don’t want to get into the nitty-gritty right off the bat. Once fired up, the software shows the hostname, the IP Address, your firmware version, the model, the MAC Address, and whether or not your firmware is up to date. After highlighting a device, first time configuration is as easy as pressing the configure button.

Upon launch, QFinder will locate all the QNAP NAS on your network and will prompt you for configuration. Subsequently, it will notify you that a firmware update is available should your NAS ship without having the latest version installed.

I will almost always prefer to take control choose to manually configure the NAS… as much as Wizards will allow. This wizard starts the process by prompting you for your NAS Hostname and administrator password. The same screen allows you to choose your disk configuration with a simple dropdown menu as well as providing the total capacity the given selection provides allowing you to make an informed decision.

ASUSTOR AS5008T Review

ASUSTOR has become one of my go to manufacturers for NAS. They have made some great NAS at some very affordable prices. Naturally, as time goes on, components are less expensive for consumers and for manufacturers. This allows NAS makers to pack more power into their storage appliances without increasing costs. In some cases, we are finding more powerful NAS at lower costs. To compliment this decrease in costs, production ramps up, R&D ramps up, and product enhancements increase. Ok, the point of all that? ASUSTOR has released a new 8-bay NAS, gave it more power, slapped a new name on it, and... lowered the cost. Enter the AS5008T.
