Having my latest server build running on the Windows Server platform, there are a number of things that I have found to become a bit more difficult than I am used to. Not only have I switched to Windows as the platform, I am using Storage Spaces. This in itself is a departure from my comfort zone and has presented some scenarios that I wasn't quite prepared for. Like trying to remove a disk that Windows, for some reason, wants to keep.

It comes as no surprise to my friends and family that the time has come for me to set aside some of my storage devices and server builds of the past for something bigger and better in 2017. Over the years, we have embarked on a couple of projects related to building a NAS and piecing together a 40TB server using parts left over. This year, I have decided that I would go a few steps further...I decided that this build would last more than just a year. With that said, I started to scour the web for components and started planning the next CODServer, but why?

NAS are evolving faster than many segments of the computing world. Today, there are more NAS makers than you can shake a stick at, and all of them are on a mission to produce a product that will find its home in yours. asustor is no stranger to the market, and they have been quietly making some of the best NAS available today. While doing so, they have been keeping the costs down, the features rich, and the evolution moving forward. Recently, ASUSTOR launched their AS3102T 2-bay NAS with 4K capabilities and a Celeron processor, but will it be enough to capture our attention and deliver results that you, the consumer, are looking for?

Face it; we all love gadgets. I love them more than most. I have been running a lot lately, training, competing, etc. While running with my phone is an option for training; running long distances with my phone isn't. Additionally, running through the muck and mud with a phone strapped to you is just asking for trouble. If you tuned into our last article about streaming your HDHomerun Prime through your Plex Server using a channel application called HDHR Viewer, then you will definitely find this article to be bonus material. Having the HDHR Viewer surely makes Plex more robust and far more traveler friendly, but the interface is lacking. What is it lacking exactly? Well, first, it is lacking channel logos. Secondly, it is lacking upcoming episodes; or, an EPG of sorts. With a little patience and a bit of elbow grease, we can make both of those happen.

Until recently, I have never really had any desire to run with any music. Not sure the reason, but the rhythmic pounding of my feet and the wind in the trees always seemed to be enough. Perhaps it was because I didn't really start running any true distance until this year. The fact of the matter is, I have been getting bored on my longer runs. Without any distraction, other than an occasional bird, I find it harder to keep focused on running. QNAP has shed their Intel only t-shirts and has partnered with AMD to introduce their new TVS-X63+ Golden Cloud Turbo vNAS lineup. These NAS are powered by AMD 64-bit G-Series Quad-Core CPUs, tons of RAM, they are outfitted with 10GbE, powered by AMD Radeon graphics, and feature a brand new Gold exterior. The question is, is this NAS enough to be considered when looking to purchase a storage platform, or will it be marketing propaganda overload?

It seems like there is a new kid on the block each and every week. Whenever I think that the dust is settling, someone comes running through like the road runner kicking up a new cloud trail. To be fair, Seagate not exactly a new kid on the block and is most definitely not new to storage. With Seagate's expansion through acquisitions (including LaCie in August of 2012), they took all the best features of LaCie and their knowledge of storage and put together what might be the next middleweight contender.
