Configuring Authentication

Lets add some authentication, NTLM (NT Lan Management – WIKI: Read More) authentication that is.  This way only the accounts you have created on your home server will be able to use your WHS as a proxy server.

  1. From your FreeProxy Console Double click the PORT
  2. The window that opens is the configuration for your Port Redirection
  3. Check the box for Use HTTP Authentication
  4. Check the box for NTLM

You now need to set the permissions for this to work.  Click the button at the bottom located on the right side.  This will open a box with nothing in it and a few buttons at the bottom.  We are only interested in one… Add Resource.

The next window that opens is where the magic happens.  This is where you set the resources themselves.  Configure yours as follows.

  1. For Type: Dropdown and select HTTP Proxy Service
  2. Permission: Granted
  3. for this user group: WindowsUsers
  4. Check the box for “User must authenticate to gain access to this resource.”
  5. Press Done a few times.

You are almost configured.  The thing to remember moving forward with this is that your changes won’t take effect until you restart the service.  This process is the same as described above except instead of starting, you slick restart.

  1. From the console click Start/Stop.
  2. click restart
  3. It will prompt you to save your changes, you must.

In early 2000 I became increasingly frustrated with hardware review sites praising less then satisfactory products. The saying: “if you want something done right, do it yourself” applies here. I wasn’t satisfied, so I did it myself; and here we are years later.
