QNAP TS-451 Review

The TS-451 is a bit of a departure for QNAP. This NAS doesn’t sport the same thin metal brushed shell and black bezel. Instead, the TS-451 hits the other end of the spectrum and is dressed in a white tux with a hint of color. Instead of the metal shell, QNAP has decided that plastic will be the material of choice. The use of plastic doesn’t cheapen this NAS, the plastic is high quality and quite thick. This type of departure usually leaves me wanting, but QNAP seems to have pulled it off.

Up front, the TS-451 four very slick looking locking drive trays absent of nearby power and activity LEDs. Instead, the LEDs are located along the left side and are accompanied by Status, LAN, and USB LEDs. Interestingly enough, there is only one LED for LAN, but there are dual Ethernet Ports. Just below is the power button and OTB (One Touch Backup) button, followed by a USB 3.0 port for OTB.

Around back, the TS-451 is home to a large (120mm) YS Tech fan to keep those 7200 RPM heat makers cool. There is also an HDMI Port, dual 10/100/1000 Ethernet Ports, two USB 2.0 Ports, one USB 3.0 Port, power, and a Kensington security slot.

ASUSTOR AS5008T Review

ASUSTOR has become one of my go to manufacturers for NAS. They have made some great NAS at some very affordable prices. Naturally, as time goes on, components are less expensive for consumers and for manufacturers. This allows NAS makers to pack more power into their storage appliances without increasing costs. In some cases, we are finding more powerful NAS at lower costs. To compliment this decrease in costs, production ramps up, R&D ramps up, and product enhancements increase. Ok, the point of all that? ASUSTOR has released a new 8-bay NAS, gave it more power, slapped a new name on it, and... lowered the cost. Enter the AS5008T.
