SilverStone SST-TJ04B-EW Evolution Chassis Review

Parked directly behind the massive drive cage is an additional cage dedicated to holding six 2.5 inch drives. This can be mounted to the bottom of the case or the bottom of the large 3.5inch drive cage. Keep in mind that this cage is easily removed and if you aren’t going to use it, get rid of it… or mount it in the bottom of the larger cage.

The TJ04-E features tool-less 5.25 inch drive bays. All four of them have a clip that keeps your drives steady. If removable 3.5 inch drive bays tickle your fancy, the TJ04-E’s 5.25 inch drive bays are capable of homing the IcyDock DataCage Classic with ease, unlike the Zalman Z-MACHINE GT1000 which spaced its individual bays.

To wrap things up, SilverStone employs some neat cable management design elements that will make good on having a side panel window. There is adequate room (almost an inch!) on the back side of the motherboard tray to keep things neat. Typically, in system builds I end up bending the side panel because I have so many wires tucked back there. Not so here, everything fits nicely and there is room to spare.

The motherboard tray lays raised from the back of the chassis and has a heatsink cutout for easy CPU cooling upgrades (up to 168mm in height). Various cutouts surrounding the motherboard allows for clever management while keeping wires and airflow impeding cabling from robbing your components of fresh flowing air. The TJ04-E has plenty of room for large motherboards and large video cards (up to 17 inches).

For those of you that have large power supplies, the TJ04-E can support units that measure up to 180mm if you decide to leave the 2.5 inch hard drive cage in its native position. Otherwise, there are no limitations to the size of the PSU that can be installed.

When you put it all together, SilverStone doesn’t dissapoint. The TJ04-E is a beautiful case that provides you with plenty of options. The case is manufactured from quality materials and every detail is well thought out. The abundant cooling options helps to keep your mind at ease on those warm summer days while keeping the dust inside to a minimum. The removable dust filters are one of my favorite features and the removable drive cage can satisfy my storage hunger. With plenty of room inside, I can accommodate my larger than most 1000W power supply and still have room to spare. The cabling options and the custom SATA power connectors means I won’t be embarrassed to have a side window. Bottom line… SilverStone has maintained a high standing as a premier case manufacturer and does so with elegance and attention to detail. At $165 USD, this case isn’t cheap, but it is well worth the price tag. However, I still feel that for the money all available fan slots should be populated. Even still, SilverStone has a winner…
