Thecus N2560 Review

Underneath it all is Thecus NAS OS6, an operating environment that follows the iOS like interface the rest of the NAS industry is moving towards. Although there aren’t many functional enhancements from previous versions of the operating system, the UI has had a makeover.  However, things still don’t look as polished as other NAS operating environments.

Thecus has changed the way you interact with your NAS as well.  The N2560 now comes packaged with Thecus’s new Intelligent NAS software.  This Adobe AIR driven software package is your window to first getting your NAS configured for use, then for interacting with various functions of your NAS easily.  The software acts as a quick window into your NAS, providing you with some commonly accessed configuration elements.  Intelligent NAS software also acts as a gateway for multiple NAS, similar to that of LaCie Network assistance and Drobo Dashboard (you can see all of your Thecus NAS from the interface).  Fortunately, Thecus still maintains the web interface for NAS management.

Although the web administration may look bare at first, everything is still there.  Clicking the icon that looks like a Calendar with Settings brings up a window with all the configuration settings you expect.  You have the ability to add frequently used shortcuts to the “desktop” by simply right clicking on one of your configuration items and choosing to add shortcut.  Removing is handled the same.

ASUSTOR AS5008T Review

ASUSTOR has become one of my go to manufacturers for NAS. They have made some great NAS at some very affordable prices. Naturally, as time goes on, components are less expensive for consumers and for manufacturers. This allows NAS makers to pack more power into their storage appliances without increasing costs. In some cases, we are finding more powerful NAS at lower costs. To compliment this decrease in costs, production ramps up, R&D ramps up, and product enhancements increase. Ok, the point of all that? ASUSTOR has released a new 8-bay NAS, gave it more power, slapped a new name on it, and... lowered the cost. Enter the AS5008T.

  1. It’s possible to control this NAS (especially under XBMC) with a remote control? Is there the possibility to connect an USB dongle to use a remote, like the Logitech Harmony?

    • There are a bunch of ways you can control NAS with XBMC… iPhone or Android apps are plentiful. For my iPad, I use Constellation, Android has some good options too.

    • I haven’t used the harmony remote with these, I typically use the official XBMC app for iOS or Android. If you have a couple of bucks to spend, invest in XBMC Constellation. You won’t be disappointed with it
