When compared to other 2bay NAS we have reviewd, the N2650 performs near the top. Although the N2560 isn’t as fast as QNAP’s TS-269 PRO, I didn’t expect it to be. They are devices that occupy different classes and different price points. Having only an idea of what the Thecus offering will price out at (somewhere around $399.00) , we can expect that the TS-269 PRO will still cost at least $200.00 more. That kind of savings could easily help to populate your new NAS with some high quality HDDs.
Having said that, the N2560 is an excellent entry to mid level home/SOHO NAS. The integrated HDMI port and positive performance marks make this NAS a good option for those looking to break into the world of network storage with a twist (HDMI port and XBMC). When you start considering the additional modules available for the NAS, it starts to become even more attractive when compared to other NAS in its price point.
Overall, I don’t have any issues with the Thecus offering. I can sit back comfortably and say that this NAS will serve(r) you well. Having a price somewhere between the TS-269PRO and the LaCie 2big NAS, the N2560 fills the gap with ease without any sacrifices.
Some have been critical of the Thecus OS over the years, including myself, but Thecus is moving in the right direction. Functionally, things haven’t changed much with the OS, but the UI has made some improvements. As the OS evolves, we can expect that the UI will be further polished and offer an enhanced user experience. We as technology consumers have become used to fancy graphics and fancy UI’s, which functionally only offer enhanced aesthetics.
UPDATE: We have received word from Thecus that MSRP will be $339 USD
It’s possible to control this NAS (especially under XBMC) with a remote control? Is there the possibility to connect an USB dongle to use a remote, like the Logitech Harmony?
There are a bunch of ways you can control NAS with XBMC… iPhone or Android apps are plentiful. For my iPad, I use Constellation, Android has some good options too.
I haven’t used the harmony remote with these, I typically use the official XBMC app for iOS or Android. If you have a couple of bucks to spend, invest in XBMC Constellation. You won’t be disappointed with it
