Article: Control Your HTPC With A PS3 Remote Control

Configuring Windows to Work with the PlayStation Remote

Even though you have paired your PS3 Remote with Windows 7, the OS still has no idea what to do with it.  This is where the application PS3BluMote by Ben Barron comes in.

  • Download and extract the ZIP file to your Desktop
  • Open the Application: PS3BluMote.exe
    • On first run, you will be prompted with an error: PS3BluMote: Settings Load error! Unable to locate the settings file. A fresh settings file has been created.  Press OK as this is an expected result.
  • To start configuring how you want the Remote to operate, right click on the PS3BluMote system tray icon and choose settings.
  • Each button on the PS3 Remote Control will be represented on the left side of the application and the configurable options will be represented on the right.
  • Here you will assign values to each key on the Remote to perform keyboard actions within Windows by checking the box for the button on the remote that you want to configure in the left side of the panel, then checking the boxes for the functions that you want assigned to it on the right side of the panel.

    • Windows Media Center: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Windows-Media-Center-keyboard-shortcuts

For my purposes, I configured the application to recognize XBMC keyboard shortcuts.  If you are using XBMC and would like a quick way to get going, you can download our configuration file and move it to the configuration file folder for PS3BluMote.

CONFIGURATION FILE: settings.zip

  • To locate this file, open the PS3BluMote application settings by right clicking on the tray icon and selecting settings.
  • Choose the Settings Tab at the top of the application
  • Click Open log/settings folder

  • Move our configuration file here, overwriting the one already present.
