When it comes to storage, there are always those names you hear more often than others. No matter where I go, or what company I visit, there is always a Buffalo NAS being used. Buffalo has made a name for themselves with reliable network storage and because of this, their name is usually at or near the top when an organization is looking for network storage. However, in the current state of “throw everything and the kitchen sink at it” NAS market, can they keep up? Buffalo is the brand, and the TeraStation 5400 is the subject.
The TeraStation line of NAS from Buffalo represents their premier line of NAS and iSCSI solutions. The TeraStation 5400 is high performance, 4 bay NAS powered by an Intel Atom D2550 1.86GHz dual core CPU. The TS5400D comes with 2GB of DDr3 RAM, sports Dual Intel NICs, has 2 x USB 2.0 ports, and 2 x USB 3.0 ports. The TS5400D can be had in 4TB, 8TB, 12TB, and 16TB versions.

HIGH PERFORMANCE
TeraStation 5400 features the Intel Atom D2550 dual core processor, providing exceptional performance during file transfers and everyday NAS functions. TeraStation 5400 runs many services simultaneously and the dual core processor enables the ability to focus on concurrent tasks with minimal performance degradation: experience maximum network throughput while a replication job runs in the background, network surveillance video is recording from multiple IP cameras and remote users are accessing content.
RELIABLE AND SECURE NETWORK STORAGE
TeraStation 5400 offers high capacity, highly available storage accessible among multiple platforms for seamless centralized storage and backup. Create user and group profiles and control folder and file access to protect business critical content and privacy. Support for multiple levels of RAID provides continuous data protection and increased fault tolerance and data availability.
DATA PROTECTION AND BACKUP
TeraStation 5400 features Buffalo’s replication technology providing easy and high performance data replication from one Buffalo NAS device to another Buffalo NAS device over the network or the Internet. This offers real-time synchronous replication of data, providing easy, continuous data protection in the event of data loss. If your system configuration includes data replication from one TeraStation 5400 unit to another, you can set up fail over to automatically switch main operation over to the redundant TeraStation if the main unit ever becomes inaccessible. Within one minute, the backup TeraStation automatically assumes the role of the main TeraStation 5400 with no disruption and no IT intervention. Data can be continuously accessed without any notice of the fail over.
Additionally, TeraStation 5400 is bundled with 10 licenses of NovaBACKUP® Business Essentials, providing a complete, all-in-one data protection solution for small and medium businesses serious about protecting digital assets. Back up PCs, storage servers, Exchange servers and SQL databases.
SURVEILLANCE VIDEO MANAGEMENT
TeraStation 5400 offers a video surveillance asset management platform that allows you to record high quality video and store and manage it for easy access and playback. Buffalo Surveillance Video Manager powered by SoleraTec™ provides advanced forensics-based video lifecycle management that helps you manage and protect your video assets with ease. Support for up to 10 RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) IP-based video surveillance camera allows users to directly capture, manage and store camera feeds, enabling playback of live and stored video.
TeraStation 5400 comes with one camera license free. Additional camera licenses can be purchased separately.
STORAGE VIRTUALIZATION
Configure TeraStation 5400 as an iSCSI target to add affordable virtualized storage to your business network. Storage virtualization serves to decrease IT spending by maximizing the resources offered by modern servers while providing affordable server scalability and reliability. A virtualized environment removes a significant amount of server dependence, shifting the burden to the storage devices.
REMOTE FILE ACCESS
TeraStation 5400 offers multiple ways to remotely access and share your important data for enhanced collaboration and productivity. With WebAccess and FTP/SFTP servers, you can securely access and share files with anyone outside the local network. Trusted recipients can access selected files from anywhere over the Internet and with WebAccess files can also be accessed remotely from tablet and smartphone devices.
